By Hillary, local guide and wildlife photographer | Hillary Uganda Trips
Some of the happiest moments I’ve seen as a guide haven’t been the big wildlife sightings. They’ve been quiet ones: a couple sharing a blanket on a lodge terrace as the mist lifts off Lake Bunyonyi, or two people grinning at each other in muddy boots after meeting a gorilla family, too stunned to speak.
Uganda is a wonderful place to travel as a couple. It’s intimate, wild and surprisingly relaxed, with the kind of experiences you simply can’t find on a busy tourist trail. In this guide to Uganda safari packages for couples and honeymoons, I explain how to plan a romantic trip, the best routes and activities, when to go, what it costs and how to make it feel special from the first day to the last.
Uganda for Couples at a Glance
- Best for: Honeymoons, anniversaries, babymoons and romantic escapes
- Highlights: Gorilla trekking, boat cruises, sunset game drives, lake retreats and forest lodges
- Best months: June to September and December to February (dry seasons)
- Ideal length: 7 to 12 days for a relaxed pace
- Travel style: Private trips with a personal guide, so you set the pace
- Add-ons: Many couples finish with a beach stay on the East African coast or an island
- Booking tip: Reserve gorilla permits and special lodges 4 to 6 months ahead
Why Choose Uganda for a Romantic Safari?
Fewer Crowds, More Privacy
Uganda’s parks are quiet compared with some better-known safari destinations. You’ll often watch elephants or lions with no other vehicle in sight, which makes the experience feel personal rather than packaged.
Experiences You Can’t Share Anywhere Else
How many couples can say they met wild mountain gorillas together? Standing a few meters from a silverback is a shared memory you’ll talk about for decades.
Variety in One Trip
In Uganda, you can combine rainforest, savannah, lakes, volcanoes and highlands in a single route. That means a romantic honeymoon can include adventure and relaxation in the same week.
Warm, Welcoming Hospitality
Ugandans are famously friendly, and lodges and guides often go out of their way to make couples feel special. I’ve seen staff decorate rooms, bake cakes and arrange surprise dinners when asked.
The Most Romantic Things to Do in Uganda
1. Meet the Gorillas Together
Gorilla trekking is the heart of many Uganda honeymoons. You hike through the forest, share the effort and then spend one unforgettable hour with a gorilla family. Each of you needs your own permit, which costs about US$800 per person at the time of writing (please confirm before booking). Both partners must be at least 15 years old.
For routes, rules and what to expect, read our guide to the Kigali to Uganda gorilla trekking route and our 4 days gorillas and golden monkeys safari.
2. Share a Sunrise Canoe Ride at Lake Bunyonyi
Glide across the water in a dugout canoe as the sun comes up over the terraced hills. It’s quiet, slow and wonderfully romantic. Our guided boat trip for island exploration can be arranged as a private trip for two. For the full picture, read our Lake Bunyonyi travel guide.
3. Cruise the Kazinga Channel at Golden Hour
A late-afternoon boat cruise in Queen Elizabeth National Park is one of the most relaxing activities in Uganda. Hippos, elephants and birds line the banks while the light turns gold. See our Kazinga Channel guide and our Queen Elizabeth National Park safari guide.
4. Take a Sunset Game Drive
Big game in the evening light is magical. In Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth, an afternoon game drive often ends with elephants silhouetted against a glowing sky. Many lodges can arrange sundowners for couples. Read our Murchison Falls safari guide for ideas.
5. Track Chimpanzees in the Forest
Chimp tracking is lively, funny and a little more relaxed than gorilla trekking. It’s a great shared adventure, and it costs much less than a gorilla permit. See our chimpanzee trekking in Uganda guide and Kibale National Park complete guide.
6. Look for Golden Monkeys and Climb a Volcano
In Mgahinga, you can trek golden monkeys together, then hike a Virunga volcano if you’re feeling adventurous. Read our Mgahinga Gorilla National Park guide and golden monkey trekking guide.
7. Slow Down in the Highlands
Spend a few days on a lakeside terrace, cycle quiet village roads together or wander through terraced farms. Our best things to do in Kabale guide has plenty of low-key ideas, and our mountain biking tour in Lake Bunyonyi and Kisoro is great fun for active couples.
8. Find the Shoebill Together
Mabamba Swamp near Entebbe is a quiet canoe trip through papyrus in search of one of Africa’s strangest birds. It’s a lovely, gentle way to begin or end your trip. It’s part of our 14 days best of Uganda safari with Mabamba Swamp tour.
9. Meet Local Culture
Share a meal with a local family, learn about the Batwa people or visit a village. These moments connect you to the place and to each other. See our Batwa cultural experience at Lake Bunyonyi and our community support projects.

Best Time for a Honeymoon in Uganda
Dry Seasons: June to September and December to February
These months offer the clearest skies, drier trails and the easiest travel. They’re perfect for gorilla trekking and game drives, but they’re also the busiest. Book early.
Wet Seasons: March to May and October to November
The landscapes are lush and green, and the parks are quieter. You’ll find lower lodge rates and a more private feel, but trails can be muddy and showers are common. Many couples enjoy the rainy season for exactly those reasons.
Insider tip: If you’re getting married in a wedding season that falls in the rains, don’t worry. Uganda is still a wonderful honeymoon destination, and mornings are often clear.

Where to Stay: Romantic Lodges and Camps
Your choice of lodge shapes your honeymoon more than almost anything else. Uganda offers a wide range:
- Forest lodges near Bwindi: Cottages with views over the misty hills, often with fireplaces and private verandas
- Lakeside retreats at Lake Bunyonyi: Quiet cottages and island stays with canoe access
- Savannah lodges in Queen Elizabeth and Murchison: Rooms with views over the plains or the Nile, with sunset terraces
- Boutique and luxury camps: Private tents or villas with extra comforts and attentive service
We’ll recommend lodges that suit your budget and style, and we’ll check for honeymoon extras, such as room decorations, special dinners or late checkout.
Making It Feel Special
Small details make a big difference. When you tell us it’s your honeymoon or anniversary, we can often help arrange:
- A private vehicle and guide, so you set the pace
- A decorated room or a surprise cake on arrival
- Sundowners or a private dinner at selected lodges
- Spa treatments or massages after a trek
- Flexible schedules, so you aren’t rushed
- A photo session at golden hour, which I’d be happy to talk through with you, since photography is my passion
Availability depends on the lodge and season, so ask us early. For ideas on capturing your trip, see our Uganda photo safaris with a local professional and my guide to wildlife photography in Uganda.
How Much Does a Uganda Honeymoon Cost?
Costs vary widely, depending on your lodges, route and trip length. A few things shape the price:
- Gorilla permits: About US$800 per person at the time of writing, which is the biggest single cost
- Accommodation level: Budget, mid-range or luxury lodges can differ by hundreds of dollars a night
- Transport: A private 4×4 with a driver-guide, or domestic flights to save time
- Trip length and number of parks: More parks mean more fees and driving
- Season: High season costs more, and the rainy months are often cheaper
Because every couple travels differently, we build an itemized quote for your route rather than a one-size-fits-all package price. Browse our day tours and safaris page for current tour pricing, or ask us for a custom quote.
Ways to Save Without Losing the Romance
- Travel in shoulder or low season for lower lodge rates
- Choose one splurge lodge and mix in simpler stays
- Keep your route focused, so you spend more time and less money driving
- Book early to secure permits and rooms
Combine Uganda with a Beach or Another Country
Many honeymooners finish their safari with a beach stay, and Uganda connects easily to the East African coast and islands by flight. Others combine Uganda with Rwanda for a second gorilla experience or a short city break. See our guides to Kigali to Lake Bunyonyi and gorilla trekking from Kigali to Kisoro if you’re crossing from Rwanda.
If you’re combining countries, check your visa options early. The East Africa Tourist Visa covers Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda. Read our Uganda visa and travel requirements guide.
What to Pack for a Couples Safari
- Comfortable, neutral-colored clothing and a few nicer outfits for lodge dinners
- Warm layers for highlands and early mornings
- Waterproof jacket and sturdy hiking boots
- Gardening gloves for gorilla and chimp treks
- Insect repellent, sunscreen, hat and sunglasses
- Binoculars and a camera with spare batteries
- Power adapter and power bank
- A small gift or card for your partner, because surprises make the best memories
Health and Safety Tips
- Malaria: Parts of Uganda are malaria-risk areas. Speak to your doctor about prophylaxis.
- Vaccinations: Check requirements with a travel clinic 6 to 8 weeks before you go.
- Fitness: Gorilla trekking is moderate. You don’t need to be an athlete, but you should be able to walk for several hours.
- Pregnancy or health conditions: If either of you has a medical condition or you’re expecting, speak to your doctor before booking and tell us, so we can plan a comfortable trip.
- Travel insurance: Always buy it, because permits and lodges have strict cancellation terms.

Is Uganda a good honeymoon destination?
Yes. It offers gorillas, big game, lakes and forest lodges in a quiet, uncrowded setting. Couples love the privacy, the variety and the warm hospitality.
How many days do we need for a Uganda honeymoon?
We recommend 7 to 12 days. That gives you time for gorilla trekking, a wildlife park and a few relaxed days at a lake without rushing.
What is the best time for a honeymoon in Uganda?
June to September and December to February are best because of drier weather and easier trekking. The rainy months are quieter, greener and cheaper, so they suit couples who prefer more privacy.
How much is a gorilla permit for two people?
At the time of writing, a foreign non-resident permit costs about US$800 per person, so about US$1,600 for two. Prices can change, so confirm the current rate with us before booking.
Can we do gorilla trekking if we’re not very fit?
In many cases, yes. Tell us your fitness levels when you book, and we’ll request a gorilla family closer to the trailhead. Porters are available to help carry bags and support you on steep sections.
Can you arrange special surprises for honeymooners?
Often, yes. Many lodges can arrange decorated rooms, cakes, sundowners or private dinners. Availability depends on the lodge and season, so tell us early.
Is a private safari better for couples?
Usually, yes. A private vehicle and guide lets you set the pace, stay longer at sightings and enjoy more privacy. We can also arrange small group trips if you prefer.
Can we combine Uganda with a beach holiday?
Yes. Many couples finish with a stay on the East African coast or an island. We can help you plan the Uganda portion and connect it with your onward travel.
