Best Time to Visit Uganda: A Month-by-Month Guide from Local Experts

If you’re asking when the best time to visit Uganda is, the short answer is the dry seasons: December to February and June to August. Those months give you firmer trails for gorilla trekking, easier game drives, and fewer surprises with the weather.

But here’s what most guides won’t tell you: Uganda is a year-round destination. The “wrong” month for one traveler can be the perfect month for another. A birder will happily trade dry trails for migratory species, and a budget traveler can save real money in the quieter months.

We’ve guided guests through every season, so below we break it all down: weather, wildlife, costs, and exactly what to expect month by month.

Uganda Best Time to Visit: Quick Facts

  • Best overall months: December to February and June to August (dry seasons)
  • Wet seasons: March to May and September to November
  • Typical temperatures: 20°C to 29°C in most parks, cooler in the mountains
  • Best for gorilla trekking: June to September and December to February
  • Best for birding: November to April
  • Best for budget travel: April, May and November (low season)
  • Getting there: All international flights land at Entebbe International Airport, about 45 minutes to 1 hour from Kampala

Understanding Uganda’s Climate

Uganda sits right on the equator, so you won’t find the dramatic winters and summers of Europe or North America. Temperatures stay fairly steady all year, mostly warm days and cool evenings. What changes is the rainfall.

The country has two rainy seasons and two dry seasons:

  • Long rains: March to May
  • Short dry spell: June to August
  • Short rains: September to November
  • Long dry spell: December to February

These patterns shift a little from year to year, and the regions differ. The southwest (Bwindi, Lake Bunyonyi) is wetter and greener, while the north (Murchison Falls, Kidepo Valley) is drier. In other words, the best time to visit Uganda for one park may not be exactly the same as for another.

Best Time to Visit Uganda by Season

December to February: The Peak Dry Season

This is the most popular window, and for good reason. Skies are clear, trails are drier, and wildlife gathers around water sources, which makes spotting animals easier on safari.

Why go:

  • Excellent conditions for gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
  • Great game viewing in Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls
  • Good time for the shoebill stork around the Mabamba Swamp and Murchison Falls area
  • Perfect for Rwenzori Mountains hiking, especially January and February

Keep in mind: This is high season, so gorilla permits and good lodges sell out early. We recommend booking 4 to 6 months ahead for Christmas and New Year.

March to May: The Long Rains

This is Uganda’s wettest stretch, with April usually the rainiest month. Roads in remote areas can turn muddy, and some trails become slippery.

Why go:

  • Lush, green scenery and fewer tourists
  • Lower lodge rates, often with low-season discounts
  • Rain usually comes as afternoon downpours, not all-day washouts
  • Good for birding, as resident and migratory birds are active

Keep in mind: Gorilla trekking is still very possible, but the hikes can be muddy and tougher. Pack proper waterproofs and good boots. Some game drives in Queen Elizabeth and Murchison can be more challenging after heavy rain.

June to August: The Second Dry Season

Many of our guests say this is the sweet spot. The weather is dry, the landscape is still green from the earlier rains, and the days are comfortably warm.

Why go:

  • Ideal for gorilla trekking and chimpanzee tracking in Kibale National Park
  • Good wildlife viewing across the savannah parks
  • Comfortable temperatures for hiking and rafting
  • Works well with the northern hemisphere summer holidays

Keep in mind: July and August are busy, so book permits and accommodation well in advance.

September to November: The Short Rains

Showers return, but they’re usually shorter and less intense than the long rains. October and November can be wetter, though the days often start sunny.

Why go:

  • Quieter parks and better rates
  • Migratory birds arrive from November, which is a treat for birders
  • Lush landscapes and good photography light after the rain

Keep in mind: Gorilla trekking continues all year, and September is still a great month. By late October and November, expect more mud on the trails.

Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

For most travelers, gorillas are the reason to come. You can track mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park all year, because the permits are issued every day.

The best months are June to September and December to February. Trails are drier, the forest is easier to hike, and your photos won’t be dripping with mud.

That said, trekking in the rainy months has its own charm. You’ll deal with slippery slopes, but you’ll also enjoy a quieter forest and often a better chance of securing permits last minute.

Insider tip: Even in the dry season, Bwindi is a rainforest. It can rain on any day, so always bring a light rain jacket and waterproof bag. Trust us, it’s worth it for the encounter.

Gorilla permit prices have changed in recent years. At the time of writing, a foreign non-resident permit is priced at around US$800, but please confirm the current rate with us before you book, as the Uganda Wildlife Authority can adjust fees.

Best Time for Safari in Uganda’s National Parks

For game drives, the dry seasons are generally best. Grass is shorter, animals visit rivers and waterholes more often, and the roads are easier to drive.

Murchison Falls National Park

Uganda’s largest park is best from December to February and June to August. You’ll see elephants, giraffes, buffalo, lions and hippos, and the boat trip to the base of the falls is a highlight. It’s about a 5 to 6 hour drive from Kampala.

Queen Elizabeth National Park

Known for tree-climbing lions in Ishasha, the Kazinga Channel boat cruise, and big herds of elephants and buffalo. Visit during June to August or December to February for the most comfortable game drives.

Kidepo Valley National Park

In Uganda’s remote northeast, Kidepo is wild and spectacular. The dry months, December to March, are best, when wildlife concentrates around the Narus Valley.

Lake Mburo National Park

This is the easiest park to reach from Kampala, around 4 hours. It’s good all year, and it’s one of the few places in Uganda where you can walk or ride horses among zebras and impalas.

Best Time for Chimpanzee Trekking in Kibale

Kibale Forest National Park has one of the highest densities of primates in Africa, and chimp sightings are strong throughout the year. June to September and December to February are the most comfortable for walking, though the rainy months still deliver great sightings.

If you want to combine chimps and gorillas, a Kibale and Bwindi pairing works beautifully on a 7 to 10 day itinerary.

Best Time for Birding in Uganda

Uganda has over 1,000 bird species, making it one of Africa’s top birding countries. The best birding season is typically November to April, when migratory species join the resident birds. Many birders also target the shoebill stork, most reliably seen in the dry months of December to February.

Best Time for Adventure Activities

  • White water rafting in Jinja: Possible all year, as the Nile flows constantly. The drier months offer warmer, more comfortable days.
  • Rwenzori Mountains trekking: January, February, June and July are driest. Even then, expect cold and mud on the higher trails.
  • Source of the Nile and Lake Bunyonyi: Pleasant all year, but views and boat trips are best in the dry months.

How Much Does a Uganda Safari Cost in Each Season?

Seasonality affects what you pay, and it’s one of the smartest ways to plan.

  • High season (Dec to Feb, Jun to Aug): Higher lodge rates and early sellouts. Best weather, but book early.
  • Shoulder season (Mar, Sep, Oct): A good balance of price and conditions.
  • Low season (Apr, May, Nov): Lowest lodge rates, some with discounts of 20 to 30%, though the park and gorilla permit fees stay the same.

The biggest cost in most itineraries is the gorilla permit, and it doesn’t vary by season. That means savings come from accommodation and transport rather than permits.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Best Time to Visit Uganda

What is the best month to visit Uganda?

January, February, June and July are widely considered the best months. These are dry, which makes gorilla trekking and game drives more comfortable. If you prefer fewer crowds and lower prices, consider March, May or November.

Is Uganda worth visiting in the rainy season?

Yes. Gorilla trekking, chimp tracking and boat trips all continue in the rains. You’ll find fewer tourists, lower lodge rates and lush scenery. Just expect muddy trails and pack waterproofs.

What is the cheapest time to visit Uganda?

April, May and November are usually the cheapest months because many lodges offer low-season rates. Gorilla permit fees stay the same year-round, but accommodation can be noticeably cheaper.

When is the best time to see gorillas in Uganda?

June to September and December to February are best because trails are drier and easier. You can trek gorillas all year, since permits are available every day, but the rainy months mean muddier hikes.

How many days do I need for a Uganda safari?

We recommend 5 to 7 days to see gorillas plus a savannah park, and 10 days or more for a full trip with chimps, rafting and lakes. A short 3-day gorilla safari is also possible.

When is the best time for birdwatching in Uganda?

November to April is the best period, when migratory birds arrive and join the resident species. The shoebill is often easiest to find from December to February.

Is Uganda safe for tourists?

Uganda is generally safe for travelers, especially when you travel with a licensed local tour company. Take normal precautions, follow health advice, and keep valuables secure in cities.

Final Thoughts: Choosing the Best Time to Visit Uganda

The best time to visit Uganda depends on what you want most. Choose December to February or June to August for the driest, easiest travel.
