Gorilla Trekking in Uganda: Permits, Costs, Best Time and How to Book

There’s a moment on every gorilla trek that our guests never forget. You’ve been hiking through thick forest for a couple of hours, your boots are muddy, and then the trackers go quiet and point ahead. Through the leaves, a silverback is simply sitting there, chewing on a stem, completely unbothered by you.

Gorilla trekking in Uganda is one of the most powerful wildlife experiences on Earth, and it’s more accessible than many people think. In this guide, we explain how it works, what a permit costs, the best time to go, which park sector to choose, what to pack and how to book without stress. We live and work in Uganda, so you’re getting the real picture, not a brochure.

Why Trek Gorillas in Uganda?

Mountain gorillas are critically endangered success stories. Only around 1,000 remain in the wild, and they live in just a few forest areas across Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Uganda is home to roughly half of them.

So why choose Uganda over its neighbors?

More Choice and Better Value

Uganda has far more gorilla families open to visitors than anywhere else, which means more flexibility with dates and locations. Permits are also considerably cheaper than in Rwanda, where the price is much higher. For many travelers, that difference pays for an extra safari in Queen Elizabeth or Murchison Falls.

Wild, Beautiful Forest

Bwindi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with steep, misty hills covered in ancient rainforest. The scenery alone is worth the trip.

A Complete Uganda Experience

You can combine gorillas with chimpanzee tracking in Kibale, boat cruises, big game safaris and Lake Bunyonyi. Few countries pack so much into one trip.

How Much Does a Gorilla Permit Cost in Uganda?

The permit is the largest single cost of a gorilla safari. Prices are set by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and can change, so always confirm the current rate with us before you pay.

At the time of writing, the standard permits are:

Permit type Approximate price
Foreign non-resident US$800
Foreign resident US$700
East African citizen UGX 300,000
Gorilla habituation experience US$1,500

The habituation experience is a special option in Bwindi where you spend up to four hours with a gorilla family that’s still being trained to accept human visitors. It’s pricier, but very rewarding for serious wildlife lovers.

What the Permit Includes

  • Entry to the park for the trek day
  • A guided trek with UWA rangers and trackers
  • Armed ranger escort for safety
  • One hour with the gorillas

What’s Not Included

  • Transport to and from the park
  • Accommodation and meals
  • Porters (optional, but we strongly recommend one)
  • Tips for guides, rangers and porters

Total Cost of a Gorilla Trekking Safari

The permit is only part of the budget. A realistic Uganda gorilla trip also includes transport, lodging and food. Here’s roughly how costs break down:

  • Permit: The biggest fixed cost per person
  • Transport: A 4×4 safari vehicle with a driver-guide is the most common option, or a domestic flight to save time
  • Accommodation: Ranges from budget guesthouses to luxury lodges in the forest
  • Meals and drinks: Usually included with lodge packages
  • Extras: Porter fees, tips, souvenirs and travel insurance

Because lodging and transport vary widely, a 3-day gorilla trip costs very differently from a 7-day safari with big game. We build every itinerary around your budget and give you a clear, itemized quote with no surprises.

Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

You can trek gorillas in Uganda all year round, because permits are available every day. But some months are easier than others.

Dry Seasons: June to September and December to February

These months give you drier trails, better views and less slipping. They’re the most popular times, so permits and lodges sell out early. For Christmas, New Year and July to August, book several months ahead.

Wet Seasons: March to May and October to November

Bwindi is a rainforest, so expect rain at any time of year. During the wetter months the trails are muddier and steeper, but you’ll find fewer visitors, lower lodge prices and lush scenery. Many of our guests find the rainy season trek just as magical.

Insider tip: Whatever month you choose, bring a rain jacket and waterproof bag. Rainforests make their own weather.

For a full month-by-month breakdown, read our guide on the best time to visit Uganda.

Where to Trek: Bwindi vs Mgahinga

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Bwindi is the main gorilla destination. It holds the majority of Uganda’s gorillas and has four trekking sectors. Each one has its own character.

Buhoma Sector (North)

The oldest and most developed sector, with a wide choice of lodges and nearby community walks. Good for first-timers who want comfort and convenience.

Ruhija Sector (East)

Higher altitude, beautiful scenery and excellent birding. Ruhija is cooler and often quieter than Buhoma.

Rushaga Sector (South)

The sector with the most gorilla families, and the only one offering habituation experiences. A great choice if you want more permit availability.

Nkuringo Sector (Southwest)

Steep terrain and sweeping views across the valleys. It’s more demanding but visually spectacular, and it combines nicely with Lake Mutanda or Lake Bunyonyi.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Located in the far southwest near the Rwanda and Congo borders, Mgahinga is smaller and more rugged. It has one habituated gorilla family, and the gorillas sometimes move across the border, so sightings are less predictable. You can also hike volcanoes and meet the Batwa community here.

Which should you choose? If it’s your first trek, we usually recommend Buhoma or Rushaga for the best balance of access and comfort. If you’re fit and love dramatic views, consider Nkuringo.

How to Get to Bwindi from Entebbe and Kampala

By Road

The drive from Kampala to Bwindi takes around 8 to 10 hours, depending on the sector and traffic. Most travelers split the journey with a stop at Lake Mburo or Queen Elizabeth National Park, which turns the drive into part of the safari.

By Air

Domestic flights from Entebbe or Kajjansi take you to airstrips near Bwindi in about 1.5 hours. It costs more, but saves a full day each way. This is a good choice for short trips.

Many travelers combine Bwindi with Queen Elizabeth National Park, with the tree-climbing lions of Ishasha on the way. Others add Kibale for chimpanzees or Murchison Falls for classic big game.

Sample Gorilla Trekking Itineraries

3-Day Gorilla Trekking Safari

Drive or fly from Entebbe to Bwindi on day 1, trek on day 2, and return on day 3. Best for travelers with limited time.

5-Day Gorilla and Wildlife Safari

Entebbe to Queen Elizabeth National Park for game drives and a Kazinga Channel boat cruise, then on to Bwindi for gorillas, and back.

7-Day Uganda Primates and Safari

Kibale chimpanzees, Queen Elizabeth wildlife and Bwindi gorillas, all in one flowing loop.

10-Day Uganda Highlights

Add Murchison Falls, Jinja and Lake Bunyonyi for the complete Uganda experience.

Every itinerary can be tailored to your dates and budget, so treat these as starting points.

What a Gorilla Trek Day Looks Like

Understanding the day makes the experience less intimidating.

Early Morning Briefing

You’ll arrive at the park headquarters around 7:30 am. Rangers give a safety briefing and assign you to a gorilla family based on your fitness and the group’s preferences.

The Trek

Trackers go ahead early to locate the gorillas, then guide your group in. The hike can be 1 hour or as long as 8 hours, depending on where the family spent the night. The terrain is steep and humid, but you’ll go at your own pace, and rangers are patient.

Meeting the Gorillas

Once you reach them, you leave your bags and walking sticks behind and move in quietly with your camera. You get one hour to watch, photograph and simply be there. You must keep a distance of about seven meters, though curious youngsters sometimes ignore that rule.

The Return

You’ll hike back, tired, muddy and usually grinning. Many lodges offer a hot meal and a hot shower that feel like pure luxury.

What to Pack for Gorilla Trekking

  • Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots with good grip
  • Lightweight, long-sleeved shirt and trousers in neutral colors
  • Waterproof rain jacket or poncho
  • Gardening gloves to protect your hands on vegetation
  • Insect repellent and sunscreen
  • Hat and sunglasses
  • Daypack with water and snacks
  • Camera without flash, and extra batteries
  • Gaiters or long socks to keep ants and mud out

Insider tip: Hire a porter. For a modest fee they carry your bag, help you up the steep sections, and your money goes directly to local families. Many of our guests say it was the best decision they made.

Gorilla Trekking Rules and Health Guidelines

These rules protect the gorillas, who are vulnerable to human illness.

  • Age limit: Visitors must be at least 15 years old.
  • Health: If you’re sick with a cold, flu or similar illness, you may be refused entry for the gorillas’ safety.
  • Distance: Stay about 7 meters (21 feet) away.
  • Masks: Rangers may ask you to wear a face mask near the gorillas.
  • Noise: Speak softly and avoid sudden movements.
  • Food: No eating or drinking near the gorillas.
  • Photography: Flash is not allowed.
  • Waste: If you need the toilet, tell the ranger so it can be buried properly.

How to Book a Gorilla Permit

Permits can be booked through the Uganda Wildlife Authority or through a licensed tour operator like us. Booking through an operator is usually easier because we also arrange transport, lodging and logistics.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Choose your dates. The earlier, the better, especially for peak seasons.
  2. Choose your sector. We help you pick based on fitness and itinerary.
  3. Send us your passport details. Permits are issued in your name and cannot be changed easily.
  4. Pay the deposit. Your permit is secured once payment is confirmed.
  5. Receive your itinerary. We handle the rest, from airport pickup to lodge bookings.

We recommend booking at least 4 to 6 months ahead for peak months, though last-minute permits are sometimes available in the low season.

Is Gorilla Trekking Difficult?

It’s physically demanding but achievable for most healthy travelers. The altitude in Bwindi is between roughly 1,200 and 2,600 meters, and the hills are steep. Still, we’ve guided grandparents and first-time hikers who loved every minute.

Tips to prepare:

  • Walk or hike regularly in the weeks before your trip
  • Break in your boots well before you travel
  • Take your time, because rangers adapt to the slowest walker
  • Ask for a porter or, if mobility is limited, ask us about the sedan chair option

If you’re worried about fitness, tell us in advance and we’ll request a gorilla family that’s closer to the trailhead.

Uganda vs Rwanda for Gorilla Trekking

Uganda Rwanda
Permit cost Lower Much higher
Number of gorilla families More Fewer
Combine with other safaris Excellent Limited
Travel from airport to gorillas Longer drive Shorter drive
Scenery Dense, wild forest Volcanic mountains

Both countries offer wonderful encounters. Uganda wins on value and variety, while Rwanda is quicker to reach from Kigali. Some travelers even do both.

Frequently Asked Questions About Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

How much is a gorilla permit in Uganda?

At the time of writing, a foreign non-resident permit costs about US$800. Foreign residents and East African citizens pay less. Prices are set by the Uganda Wildlife Authority and can change, so confirm the current rate before you book.

What is the best time to go gorilla trekking in Uganda?

June to September and December to February are best because trails are drier. You can trek all year, since permits are issued every day. The rainy months are quieter and cheaper, but muddier.

How long do you spend with the gorillas?

You spend one hour with the gorillas once you find them. The trek itself can take anywhere from one hour to eight hours, depending on where the group is that day.

Is gorilla trekking safe?

Yes. Rangers carry out safety briefings and escort every group. The gorillas are habituated, and accidents are very rare. Follow your guide’s instructions and keep your distance.

What is the minimum age for gorilla trekking?

The minimum age is 15 years. This rule is strictly enforced for the gorillas’ safety, so children under 15 cannot join, even with a parent.

Can I trek gorillas if I am not very fit?

Yes, in many cases. Tell us your fitness level when you book and we’ll request a gorilla family closer to the trailhead. Porters and, for those with limited mobility, sedan chairs are also available.

Is it better to see gorillas in Uganda or Rwanda?

Both are excellent. Uganda offers lower permit costs, more gorilla families and easy combinations with other safaris. Rwanda is closer to its airport but more expensive.

How far in advance should I book?

Book 4 to 6 months ahead for peak months such as July, August, December and January. In the low season you may find permits with shorter notice, but earlier is always safer.

Final Thoughts: Is Gorilla Trekking in Uganda Worth It?

In our experience, absolutely. Gorilla trekking in Uganda is a rare mix of adventure, conservation and pure emotion, and your permit fee directly protects the animals and supports local communities. Plan early, pack well, and let local experts handle the details.
