It costs far less than gorilla trekking, it’s easier to fit into your schedule, and it takes place in the stunning Virunga volcano landscape near my home in Kabale. What Are Golden Monkeys?

Golden monkeys are a rare, endangered primate found only in the high bamboo forests of the Virunga volcanoes and a few nearby areas in Central Africa. They have a golden-orange back, a dark, almost black tail and limbs, and a cheerful, expressive face. Uganda’s Mgahinga is the best place to see them, because they’re fully habituated to visitors.

They live in large, noisy troops, often with dozens of individuals, and they spend much of the day feeding on bamboo shoots and leaves. This makes them active, easy to watch and wonderful to photograph.

What a Golden Monkey Trek Looks Like

The Briefing

You meet rangers at the park headquarters in the early morning for a safety briefing and instructions. The rules are simple, and the rangers are friendly and patient.

The Trek

Trackers go ahead to locate the troop, then guide your group in. The walk through bamboo can be muddy and slippery, but the terrain is generally gentler than a gorilla trek. Expect anything from one hour to four hours, depending on where the monkeys moved overnight.

One Hour with the Monkeys

Once you find them, you have one hour to watch, listen and photograph. The monkeys often move quickly, so be ready to follow. Keep a respectful distance, and let them decide how close they come.

The Return

You’ll walk back with a big smile and probably a muddy pair of boots. Many guests enjoy a hot meal at their lodge afterward, with volcano views if the weather is clear.

Best Time for Golden Monkey Trekking

Golden monkeys can be trekked all year, but conditions change with the seasons.

Dry Seasons: June to September and December to February

Trails are drier, the bamboo forest is easier to walk through and the views are clearer. This is the best time for photography. It’s also the busiest period, so book early.

Wet Seasons: March to May and October to November

The forest is lush, but the trails can be very slippery and mist is common. Treks still go ahead, though you’ll want waterproofs and good boots.

Insider tip: Mgahinga is high and cool. Even in the dry season, pack a warm layer and a rain jacket.

Photography Tips for Golden Monkeys

Golden monkeys are fast and often in shaded bamboo, so photography takes a little planning.

• Use a fast lens. A wide aperture helps in the dim forest.
• Raise your ISO. Don’t be afraid of a higher ISO to freeze the action.
• Bring a zoom lens. A 70 to 200mm or 100 to 400mm lens gives you flexibility.
• Shoot in bursts. Their movements are quick, so burst mode helps.
• No flash. Flash is not allowed and can disturb the animals.
• Look up. Many of the best shots are in the branches, so keep your camera ready.
• Protect your gear. Mist and rain are common, so bring a dry bag and lens cloths.

Rules and Health Guidelines

These rules protect the monkeys, who can catch human illnesses.

• Age limit: Visitors must be at least 12 years old.
• Health: If you have a cold, flu or similar illness, you may be refused entry.
• Distance: Keep a respectful distance and don’t try to touch the monkeys.
• Noise and food: Speak softly and don’t eat near the animals.
• Photography: No flash.
• Waste: Tell your ranger if you need the toilet, so it can be handled properly.

From Kabale and Lake Bunyonyi

The drive takes about 9 to 10 hours via Masaka, Mbarara and Kabale. Many travelers break the trip with a stop at Lake Mburo, Queen Elizabeth or Lake Bunyonyi. You can also fly to Kisoro airstrip and save a full day.

How to Book Golden Monkey Trekking

Permits can be booked through the Uganda Wildlife Authority or through a licensed tour operator like us. Booking through an operator is usually easier because we also arrange transport, lodging and logistics.
