1. Reliable Hiking Boots for Treks and Nature Walks

Expect to walk through steep hills, muddy trails, and thick vegetation during your adventures. Whether it’s hiking in Mgahinga Gorilla Park or strolling around the local villages, a solid pair of waterproof hiking boots and a walking stick is a must.

Look for boots with ankle support and anti-slip soles—these will serve you well on uneven terrain around Lake Bunyonyi and nearby national parks.

If you plan to go on a gorilla safari tracking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest or Volcanoes National Park, pack:

  • Long sleeved shirts to protect from insect bites and scratches

3. Insect Repellent and Protective Wear

Lake Bunyonyi has a mild climate, but it’s still wise to come prepared to prevent safari ants, as well as other insects, mosquitoes—especially during nature walks or canoe rides. Insect repellents should be applied to prevent bites from forest insects, and don’t forget to pack drinking water .

Pack insect repellent with DEET, wear long-sleeved shirts, and bring light gloves if you’re going deep into the forest trails.

4. Drinking Water & Refillable Bottles

Hydration is key, especially when exploring the rolling hills of Western Uganda, alongside wearing the right clothing. While bottled water is available, a refillable water bottle or hydration bladder is more eco-friendly.

Boil or filter lake water before drinking—ask your local guide for safe water options.

5. Protection from the Sun

The direct sun at high altitudes near Lake Bunyonyi and gorilla parks can be intense. Pack:

  • Sun glasses with UV protection
  • Wide-brimmed hat
  • Sunscreen
  • Lip balm to avoid dry lips

This will protect you during boat tours, game drives, and photography sessions.

6. Energy Giving Snacks

You’ll often be out exploring for hours. Keep energy bars, nuts, or dried fruit in your bag, and don’t forget to pack sun screen. Especially helpful during early morning starts or long treks.

7. Bird Watching Gear & Photography Essentials

Lake Bunyonyi is a haven for bird enthusiasts with over 200 bird species, including weaver birds, grey crowned cranes, and many little birds.

Travel Tips for Gorilla Trekking

Planning a gorilla trekking safari in Uganda or Rwanda? Trekking to see mountain gorillas in their natural habitat is a once-in-a-lifetime experience—one that requires proper preparation, respect for nature, and a few insider tips to make it unforgettable. As a local guide and professional photographer based near Lake Bunyonyi, I’ve led countless travelers into the misty jungles of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Mgahinga, and Volcanoes National Park for trekking gorillas . Here are my top travel tips to help you enjoy every moment of this wild adventure:

1. Book Your Gorilla Permit in Advance

Permits are limited and in high demand. In Uganda, permits are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and cost around $800 for foreigners. In Rwanda, through Volcanoes National Park, permits cost $1,500. It’s best to book 3–6 months in advance, especially during the dry season (June–September and December–February).

Pro tip: I can assist with organizing permits and transportation for a smoother experience—reach out via Hillary Uganda Trips!

2. Be Physically Prepared

Gorilla trekking can be strenuous. You may hike for 2 to 8 hours through steep terrain, muddy trails, and thick vegetation. Some gorilla families live deep in the forest, so build up stamina with regular walks or hikes before your trip. Stretch your legs with nature walks around Lake Bunyonyi before the trek to get acclimated to the elevation.

3. Pack the Right Gear

4. Respect Photography Rules

You’ll want to capture this incredible moment, but flash photography is not allowed, as it can disturb the mountain gorillas live in their natural habitat. Set your camera for low light conditions, and bring extra batteries. If you’re joining one of my guided photography tours, I’ll help you get stunning shots without disrupting the animals.

Tip: A zoom lens (200–400mm) is ideal for clear photos from a safe distance.

5. Follow the Rules Around Gorillas

Gorillas share over 98% of our DNA and are susceptible to human diseases. To protect them:

  • Keep a 7-meter distance
  • Avoid eye contact (can be seen as aggression)
  • Don’t eat or drink near them
  • Speak in low tones
  • No flash photography
  • If you’re sick (cold, flu), do not trek

Respecting these gorilla trekking rules helps ensure the safety of both visitors and the gorillas.

6. Start Early

Treks begin early in the morning, so wake up early, have a good breakfast, and be at the park headquarters on time. Orientation and ranger assignments happen before the trek starts. Being punctual ensures you’re assigned a group suitable for your fitness level.

7. Trek in the Dry Season (If Possible)

While gorilla trekking is available year-round, the dry seasons (June–September and December–February) offer more comfortable hiking conditions and better photography opportunities. The wet season (March–May and October–November) can be muddy, but also offers lush, green scenery and fewer tourists.

8. Hire a Porter

Hiring a porter not only supports the local community but also lightens your load during various safari activities . They can carry your backpack and assist during challenging parts of the hike. Many porters are former poachers now earning a living through conservation—so it’s a meaningful way to give back.

9. Bring Personal Items and Medications

Bring essential personal medications, lip balm, contact lenses or glasses, and any prescriptions you may need. Include hand sanitizer and wet wipes for comfort during the hike.

10. Stay Close to the Parks

To reduce travel time on trekking day, book accommodation close to Bwindi, Mgahinga, or Volcanoes National Park. There are many beautiful lodges near Lake Bunyonyi, offering a peaceful rest spot before or after your trek.

11. Respect the Environment

Take nothing but photos, leave nothing but footprints. Don’t litter, avoid making loud noises, and stay on the trail. Gorilla trekking is a deeply immersive eco-tourism activity—respect nature, and you’ll be rewarded tenfold.

12. Book with a Trusted Local Guide

Gorilla trekking is more than just seeing mountain gorillas—it’s about connecting with the forests, the communities, and local culture. Booking through a local expert like Hillary, who was born and raised near Lake Bunyonyi, ensures an authentic gorilla tour experience tailored with love and deep knowledge of the region.
