Day 1: Kigali – Cross into Uganda – Arrive at Rushaga, Bwindi

Upon your arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by Hillary, your professional Ugandan guide and expert in gorilla trekking adventures. After a short briefing, you will embark on a scenic journey heading north, crossing into Uganda through the Katuna border. This comfortable 2–3-hour drive unveils the breathtaking landscapes of Rwanda’s rolling hills and Uganda’s highland scenery, offering numerous photo opportunities along the way.

After border formalities (you will need an East Africa Tourist Visa or separate visas for Rwanda and Uganda), you will continue to Kabale town where you will enjoy a delicious local lunch. From there, the journey continues to Rushaga, located in the southern sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park — one of the most biologically diverse rainforests in the world and home to nearly half of the world’s mountain gorillas.

On arrival, you will check in at your carefully selected budget lodge, such as Rushaga Gorilla Camp (budget rooms) or Bweza Gorilla Lodge, where comfort meets affordability. Spend the afternoon relaxing as you soak in the fresh forest air and panoramic views over the lush canopy. For those interested, Hillary can organize an optional community walk to visit the local Batwa (indigenous forest people) or experience authentic village life nearby (optional, at extra cost).

Later, enjoy a hearty dinner at the lodge as you prepare for the highlight of your journey — the unforgettable encounter with the mountain gorillas.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking Adventure – Return to Kigali

After an early breakfast, Hillary will escort you to the nearby Rushaga Park Headquarters where you will meet your park rangers for a short briefing. You will be assigned to one of the habituated gorilla families, and after a few safety and trekking guidelines, your once-in-a-lifetime adventure begins.

The trek through Bwindi’s dense rainforest can be moderately challenging, taking anywhere from 2 to 5 hours depending on the location of your assigned gorilla group. Along the way, you will hike through thick foliage, cross small streams, and marvel at the richness of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Once your group locates the gorillas, you will have a magical hour to observe them — watching them feed, groom, and interact in their natural habitat, a powerful and emotional wildlife encounter that few experiences in the world can match.

After trekking, you will return to the starting point to receive your official Gorilla Trekking Certificate, a beautiful keepsake to commemorate your adventure.

You will then enjoy a quick lunch or packed snack before beginning the scenic drive back to Kigali. With Hillary navigating, you will once again cross the Katuna border, reaching Kigali by early evening. You will be dropped off at your hotel in Kigali or directly at the airport for your onward flight, depending on your travel plans.
